Common sense of science popularization of degradable plastic bags
Details
Plastic degradation refers to that the macromolecular polymer reaches the end of its life cycle, and its molecular weight decreases, which is manifested by the brittleness, fracture, softening, hardening, loss of mechanical strength, etc. The degradation of ordinary plastic bags takes decades or even hundreds of years. The landfill or incineration of non degradable plastic bags will pollute the environment. In order to protect the environment, the invention of degradable plastic bags has been introduced.
Degradable plastic bag refers to the plastic bag that is easy to degrade in the natural environment by adding a certain amount of additives (such as starch, modified starch or other cellulose, photosensitizer, biodegradable agent, etc.) in the production process to reduce its stability.

Classification of degradable plastic bags

1. Photodegradable plastic bag
The photosensitizer is mixed into the plastic to gradually decompose the plastic under sunlight. It belongs to an earlier generation of degradable plastics. Its disadvantage is that the degradation time is difficult to predict due to sunlight and climate change, so the degradation time cannot be controlled.

2. Biodegradable plastic bag
Plastics that can be completely decomposed into low molecular compounds under the action of microorganisms. It is characterized by convenient storage and transportation. As long as it is kept dry, it does not need to avoid light, and has a wide range of applications, it can not only be used for agricultural mulch, packaging bags, but also widely used in the medical field. With the development of modern biotechnology, biodegradable plastics have received more and more attention and become a new generation of research and development hotspot.

3. Light/biodegradable plastic bag
A kind of plastic that combines photodegradation with microorganism. It has the characteristics of photodegradation of plastic by both light and microorganism.
Water degradable plastic bags add water absorbing substances to the plastic, which can be dissolved when discarded in the water after use. They are mainly used in medical and sanitary appliances (such as medical gloves) for easy destruction and disinfection.
